Last year I was part of presenting Showdown in German television. The show is called: 1, 2 oder 3 with Elton. It’s a kids show, where children have to guess, which of the 3 answers for a question is correct. Bianca, a referee and myself presented the game and Elton asked a question about it. You can find the show here: https://www.zdf.de/kinder/1-2-oder-3/von-minigolf-eishockey-und-paddel-100.html The Showdown part starts around 15:20

400m at German ParaAthletics indoor championship
This year the indoor German ParaAthletics championship took place in Erfurt again. But this year my trainer had another distance in mind for me. Not 3000m like las yer. Not 1500m as in the outdoor championship las year. Not 800m as in Augsburg.. I ran 400m.
My guide this year was Simon Pieper. He is a great athlete for long sprint, as 400m is called, himself. For 400m Simon really needs to mirror my legs and arms, so I’m not slowed down. Simon really did a great job with that in the training and the race!
I ran against 3 other man in a timed run. The race got of ok from lane 3. I think I could have done a better start. The first round was ok in lower 30 seconds range. After the 2nd corner we could change to lane 1 and in the 2nd we had to over take another runner, who overestimated himself. Unfortunately we lost speed, because we slowed down to his pace and accelerated after the corner again. After that it was the final corner and the finish line after 73.48 seconds. I was really happy all worked out with the starting block and the lane switch. Simon really did a great job! The time could have been better. But now I can top that in the outdoor events in the summer.

Showdown Germany League Region South Division C 2025
Last year was my first Showfown tournament and i came in second to last. This year I was keen to do better.
The tournament took place in Frankfurt in the Blindeninstitut. It was played on two Czech tables. One in a small room, which I preferred. The other in a gym hall in a nearby school. Especially with the used Dutch balls I had trouble hearing the balls well.
As an added distraction I hurt myself on my right thumb, which is on my racket-hand. It took a minor surgery to get the infection and pus out. Sometimes it really hurt during playing and I had to hold the racket in a different way to protect the wound as best as possible.
Nonetheless in the group phase I was a bit surprised, that I had a chance and actually won all games in the group phase. So after the first day I actually attended the quarter final, which I won too! The next day I played Horst from Kassel, who was too much for me. I won one set but lost the match. After that I played for third place an won. I’m pretty happy with my result. Let’s see what happens next year

3. Chemnitz Every Man Showdown Tournament
On the 16th of November, I attended the 3rd Every Man Showdown Tournament. The tournament was held at the blind school in Chemnitz. A total of 23 people competed. One set was played against a random opponent over 5 rounds.
The start was a bit bumpy. Some slow balls went in because I had trouble hearing the ball on the oldest table. However, I won the first game anyway. After that, I improved and managed to win all 5 of my games. As a result, I won the tournament and received a beautiful handmade clay cup as a prize. I was really happy and am now looking forward to playing in the C Division South in February in Frankfurt.

Inclusive Max Steger Sportfest 2024
On July 28th 2024 I attended the inclusive Max Steger Sportfest with Xin. We ran the 800m. This was my first 800m run and I had a target time of 3:00. During training, that seemed reasonable after timed interval training. After warmup Xin and I did some progression runs to the target pace. This was my 4th time I trained with my new spike shoes. I have to run on the forefoot with these, which is quite challenging. After the start we hit the target pace pretty well without over pacing. between 400m to 600m I had a couple of steps, where I used my heel. This cost me a couple of seconds. On the last stretch I didn’t use my heel again and I finished in 3:00.68. Almost exactly the target time. This was a great last event for the season and I’m looking forward to some vacation!

German ParaAthletics Championship 2024
I attended the German Para Athletics Championship in Erfurt on 15th of June 2024. This time I ran with Frank again. This time I had better preparation. The first of of the 3.75 rounds was a bit too fast again. So I slowed down a bit too much in the 3rd round. The last round was faster again with a nice final straight. I finished in 6:44, which is 15 seconds better than the Ludwig Jall Sportfest one month earlier. But I’m very happy, that I improved my time and next up will be 800m!

Ludwig Jall Sportfest on May 11th 2024
I attended the Ludig-Jall-Sportfest in Munich Germany. I did 1500m with Chloe. It was a very hot day and unfortunately I was sick two weeks and had only 1 week of training. Especially on the last run on the straight I really felt, that I had a bad cold before. But thanks to Chloe and her perfect step in my rhythm i managed to finish in 6:59:57.

Starting with ClickSonar
I heard about ClickSonar a long time ago. I always thought it would be too hard for me to learn. However, playing Showdown since last year showed me that I can train my hearing much better than I thought. So, I looked for a way to learn it and ended up with Juan Ruiz at clicksonar.eu. He’s located in Vienna, Austria, which was a short train ride away.
First up was learning the click. This was a bit tricky for me, but after a couple of minutes, it worked okay, and Juan prepared some things for the next exercise.
He took a plate and a book and held them in front of me, either to the left or right of my head. I had to figure out what it was and where it was. That worked out pretty well. I was amazed that I could do that.
The next exercise was walking around the school for the blind. First up was following the hallway. After some trial and error, that worked out pretty well. If you scan a bit with your head while clicking, you can hear in which direction the sounds get reflected well and where not. The direction with less sound reflection is the way to go along the hallway.
In the next exercise, we looked for doors. Some doors were in niches, which made them pretty easy to find with ClickSonar. I also learned to get some idea of how big a room is and how to find the stairway. I also tried positioning myself in the middle of the hallway just by clicking. That all worked pretty well. Juan really has a great concept for teaching ClickSonar. That was it for the first day, and my brain was full of new impressions.
On the second day, we started off with some exercises from the day before and then headed outside. Outside was a different story for me. I had a much harder time hearing my click. Traffic and other sounds on the street were a distraction. But after some hints from Juan, I could figure out some things, like bigger poles, bus stations, and when I walk by a car, when it ends.
We also exchanged the bigger plastic cane tip of my white cane with a small Kellerer ceramic tip. At first, I was skeptical, thinking it might get stuck all the time. But it works great if you lift the white cane a bit, just enough to still have contact with the ground. Juan said that I can read the ground like reading Braille that way, and he was right. Another benefit, besides the tactile one, is the echo from the ceramic cane tip. I can now walk along a wall with about a 0.5m distance just by listening to the echo from the cane tip.
The last exercise was a sort of hide-and-seek game. We went to a grassy area in a park with trees. I had to search for the trees with ClickSonar. That worked out pretty well. The sound gets lost in the distance if it doesn’t hit a tree and reflects back to you. I never thought I could achieve this in just one afternoon and one morning of training.
Juan really has a great concept for learning ClickSonar. I have lots of stuff to train at home. My click is getting more consistent and louder each day, which makes it much easier. Thanks, Juan, for the great two days. I can’t wait to see what I will be able to “see” with ClickSonar!

Bavarian Paraski Championships 2024
I attended the Bavarian Ski Championships on March 8, 2024, at Großer Arber in the Bavarian Forest. Last year, I had a bad crash: I fell in the woods and had to be pulled out. I was a bit nervous about this. The weather was really warm, and the race was held at 10:00. My guide this year was Tom, and we harmonized from the start. Unfortunately, we could only do three runs before the race. The race consisted of two runs, with the fastest time counting.
In the first run, I had a mix-up at the start. It was very slow, but I didn’t crash. For the second run, the start was much better, and I finished in 53 seconds, placing 4th, 10 seconds behind the 3rd place. After last year’s crash, my goal was to finish both runs, which I did. Next year, I can focus on more speed!
Thanks to the Rotary Club and BVS for the organization. See you next year!
